Abstract

Objective: Describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of patients who underwent laparoscopic anterior resection with immediate anastomosis for rectal cancer at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital from January 2023 to September 2025. Evaluate the early outcomes of laparoscopic anterior resection with immediate anastomosis in this patient cohort.

Patient and methods: A retrospective and prospective descriptive study of 39 patients diagnosed with rectal cancer who underwent laparoscopic anterior resection with immediate anastomosis at Viet Tiep Friendship Hospital.

Results: The male-to-female ratio was 1.17:1. The mean age was 67.38 ± 9.81 years. The prevalence of comorbidities was 48.7%. Clinical symptoms included mucus–bloody stool in 71.8% of patients, lower abdominal and perineal pain in 100%, and altered bowel habits in 53.8%. Colonoscopy revealed tumor location in the upper rectum (>10 cm) in 12.8%, mid rectum (>5 cm) in 61.5%, and lower rectum (≤5 cm) in 25.7%. Computed tomography (CT) detected rectal tumors in 97.4% of cases. The mean operative time was 193.2 ± 38.43 minutes. Low anterior resection accounted for 82.1%, anterior resection for 5.1%, and ultra-low anterior resection for 12.8%. The mean number of harvested lymph nodes was 6.3 ± 3.9. Postoperative complications occurred in 15.4% of patients. The mean distal resection margin was 3.09 ± 1.06 cm. The mean postoperative hospital stay was 11.13 ± 2.61 days. Postoperative pathological staging showed stage I in 23.1%, stage II in 43.6%, and stage III in 33.3%. Overall outcomes were good in 84.6% of cases and moderate in 15.4%.
