AGE-SPECIFIC CHANGES IN NEW PENILE CANCER CASES FROM THE POPULATION-BASED CANCER REGISTRATION IN HO CHI MINH CITY FROM 2003-2016
Abstract
Background: Penile cancer is one of the rare cancers in Vietnam. There have been many studies on penile cancer in Vietnam, but to date, there has been no study based on the data of the population-based cancer registration on the changes in new penile cancer patients in Vietnam.
Objectives: To analyse age-specific changes in new penile cancer patients from the population-based cancer registration in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam from 2003 to 2016.
Methods: Data from 299 new penile cancer cases from the HCMC Cancer Registry were used. New penile cancer cases by age groups were retrospectively quantified and age -specific changes in new penile cancer patients in Ho Chi Minh City from 2003 to 2016 were assessed.
Results: According to the HCMC Cancer Registry, from 2003 to 2016,
+ The mean age of men with penile cancer was 54.2 (± 16.3) years.
+ Young adults (<50-year-old) comprised 42.8% of new penile cancer patients (95% CI: 37.2-48.4%). The proportion of young penile patients was much higher than in many countries around the world.
+ New penile cancer patients tended to increase sharply in men aged 50-59. There was a mild decrease in patients under 50 years old.
Conclusions: From 2003 to 2016, new penile cancer patients in Ho Chi Minh City tended to increase sharply in men aged 50-59. There was a mild decrease in patients under 50 years of age.
The proportion of new young penile cancer patients in Ho Chi Minh City was high. Therefore, it must consider penile cancer as a real possibility in individuals who present with any suspicious symptoms, even in adults less than 50-year-old.
